Day 6: 8/13/02:

  • 6:40 Left for Niagara Falls. The camp ground had water that smelled like eggs.
  • So far, Canada looks a lot like America, where are the people with the flappy heads? It's weird seeing the Canadian flag flying everywhere. [I guess it could be worse... there could've been hordes of locusts flying everywhere...]
  • 7:14 Discovered the art of X-treme wheat thin eating. I think we've been in the car too long...
  • In Canada we've traded in "No way Jose" for "no way hoser". shoot me.
  • 7:26 hmm... evidently, Bradford is the "the telephone city", weird. They've got the Wayne Gretsky parkway. And a home depot. [Heh heh heh... silly Canadians, playing right into our hockey stereotypes...]
  • 7:47 we're in Hamilton Canada, and it's really nice looking. We're gonna try and find the castle here after we get some film. This guy is staring at us all kinds. Even while he is getting into his car. What the crap? [At least he didn't throw a bottle at us and yell "yankee go home!"]
  • 7:48 Ah... Evidently, we are on the wrong side of a one way street. [Evidently staring at people is how they punish going the wrong way on a street in Canada]
  • We went and got film at 7-11, they give you the white copy here in Dundura.[I was trying to figure out is that was standard in Canada, or if the pretty lady at the counter just messed up because she was so love-stricken with me] All the buildings are brick here.
  • 8:22 Well, the castle was pretty unimpressive, but at least we got to get out and skate around. [The castle had a little building off to the side with a marker that read "the cock pit." The building looked like an over-done shed, and was being used to store some boxes and other random stuff. After peering through the windows and trying all the doors, we walked down the dirt path alongside fo the building towards the waterfront. The backside of the cockpit was covered in handwritten homoerotic slogans and meeting times... I wish I was making this up.]
  • We're not going to make it all the way to Toronto because it's way out of our way and we don't really have anything to do there.
  • 8:33 crossed over Lake Ontario.
  • 9:26 There is no parking in Niagara Falls. Seriously.
  • 10:26 Skated around the falls and got real hot and thirsty. We made a bunch of sandwiches that we hope don't get ruined in the cooler. [The sandwiches were all right, and we sat next to a family that was talking about European living and family politics... I was confused.] We kept skating by bike cops and I thought that they were going to bust us like we were in Santa Cruz. we're heading toward the "whirlpool." I'll be damned if we have to pay! [There's something cool about skating around tourist attractions... it's like you've got a sign on saying "I'm the coolest tourist here... I totally thought ahead and don't have to walk around like you shmucks... and I don't have a crying kid to boot!" Maybe it was just me.]
  • 10:51 Just passed an ad for a fitness center where you can totally see the lady's nipples. at least they are being honest about why most guys are there...
-Brian dropped the keys on his toes and now they are bleeding. [Much like the corn in coon rapids, the whirlpool just kept going round and round...]
  • 11:04 back in the U.S., greeted by the most over-it customs dip-shit ever, and Brian is taking it out on me.
  • 2:34 It's overcast and it looks like it is going to rain. this is the first time we have been at a comfortable temperature in days.
  • 12:40 it' starting to rain, camping will be interesting...
  • 12:50 ran barefoot to mail postcards out. it's really pretty here, rolling hills and lots of big, green trees. [I could've sworn I wrote down where we were... but I didn't... mid-New York somewhere]
  • 2:42 arrived at the Corning Museum of Glass. Big woop. [Me'n and Brian were really grouchy and decided against going and exploring the town... about 5 minutes after writing this entry I screamed"mother fucker" really loud for apparently no reason... Brian laughed really hard at me. I thought we were going in the wrong direction or something. whoops.]
    Brian
  • 3:09 ok. Found a town of "Dix" and Nate stepped in a carcass. [Wow! A whole town of Dix! I know a few people who should move here to be with their people. What you can't see here is the rotting carcass I'm standing in. Luckily for me, I hadn't noticed until after the picture, after I had tromped around in it with only sandals on. One of these dix must've left it there as a cruel joke. I saw the sign and really wanted a picture with it, but was too grumpy to fathom turning around. Level-headed Brian said "you really want a picture of that, don't you" and the rest is history. Everybody thank Brian, I now have a picture of the town of dix.]
  • 3:14 KOA, 295 miles, ugh. [I'll probably say this about every two entries, but this seemed like the longest day ever. We only drove 294 miles, but it felt like we'd just sprinted across Nebraska again. Must've been something about crossing in and out of Canada... it steals your life-essence. The KOA we stayed in that night was the most foresty one we'd been in, it was almost not like a parking lot. The funny thing is, there were huge, loud freight trains that ran by our site all night using their air horns to let us know that everything was all-right. Compounded by the trucks jake-brakin' it (imagine the sound of a chainsaw being put through a wood chipper here) on the highway across the gorge from us, it was an interesting night, in the bosom of nature...]

onward to day 7! >(Coming sooner than later)
